I’m Out to Change My World

I’m out to change my world. One person at a time!  Here’s what I just started doing:

When I go to a store & the clerk/cashier is pleasant & helpful (and appreciates my humor):

1. I ask their name.

2. I tell them that I appreciated their (helpfulness or sense of humor or whatever).

3. I ask them for the name of their supervisor so I can tell the supervisor what a good job they did.

4. I ask where I can find their supervisor.

Then:

1. I seek out the supervisor.

2. (I smile inwardly as they tense up expecting a complaint.)

3. I tell them that I know that they are used to bad reports about employees, but…

4. I want to give a good report about (NAME) and that I think the employee deserves some kind of reward because they are good for business!

Then:

1. I watch the supervisor smile and relax a bit.

2. They ALWAYS thank me for taking the time.

I feel so happy after that.  It is one little thing that I can do to change my world into a little better place!

Here’s my challenge to you: Will you join me in the campaign to intentionally thank people for good service? I’m thinking that it doesn’t just stop at the employee and the supervisor. Don’t you think it’s a pretty good guess that they will treat everyone else in their path in a much kinder way as a result of being thanked?

You might even notice a bit of a spring in your own step as you walk to your car. And we might even catch you smiling throughout the day as you remember how good it felt to bring a bit of beauty to someone else’s day!

Try it. It’s addictive! The only thing it will cost you is a few minutes of time.

Pass this on and let’s see if we can start a “gratefulness revolution“! Share this blog post on FB and on LI and with your email lists. Think of the possibilities! 🙂

One person at a time…we can begin to change our world for the better! Are you up for the challenge??? I promise you it will be fun!

Then, use the comment box below to report back to the rest of us. We want to hear your story!

Busted By God

Busted by God happens to me frequently.  (On those occasions, I usually only tell my very closest friends about the details, so because we are getting to be pretty good friends after all this time, I decided it was time to share one of these stories with you.)

Normally, the cause is: I get a good idea and I spend a lot of time organizing and thinking of every possible scenario and then someone or something prevents it going forward and so I’ll find myself “clearing” with a good friend rather than talking to God about it; and so…since He is listening to my conversations anyway,  I get a check in my spirit. Hence…the Busted by God idea. Yup! He lets me know that He’s listening. Is He being mean? No! God is never mean! He’s just letting me know He loves me and wants what’s best for me! He feels that way about you, too!

Well, last Saturday, God went a step further…and I love it when this happens!

He is intimately involved in every detail of my life. I know that. But it’s really cool when He verifies that love in tangible ways. Ways I can’t ignore.

That morning, I had prayed “Lord Jesus, speak to me. I’m ready to listen and eager to obey.” Later in the day, I was on the phone sadly describing a disappointment to a friend and got that check in my spirit and continued to talk anyway. Someone had hurt me and I wanted sympathy. Suddenly, I realized it was nearly time to get to the church, since I was scheduled to assist with communion. So, I rushed off the phone to go get myself dressed and out the door.

Then, I heard that check in my spirit again and thought of my morning prayer, but I was short on time to talk with my Father and to hear what He had to say, so I rushed to the table where my Bible and study tools were still open from the morning. And grabbed up Oswald Chambers My Utmost for His Highest all the while praying for God to “give me a word” that would direct my heart to Him and away from my complaints. So…he did just that!

I did what is known as “The Open Window Method”…open anywhere and expect God to speak. It’s normally just a lazy way to grab anything. I know. I know. Yes, I was taking the lazy way out. But speak He did! (I LOVE THIS!) I happened to open to June 17. The title was “The Uncritical Temper”. And the verse at the top was: “Judge not that ye be not judged.” (Matthew 7:1)  I laughed right out loud. Yup! Busted by God! Because He loves me.  So, my eyes fell down the page and focused on something I had previously highlighted: “There is always one fact more in every man’s case about which we know nothing…I have never met the man I could despair of after discerning what lies in me apart from the grace of God.”

Is that cool, or what?! Remember I was on my way to serve communion. It would NOT have been OK to have pride and criticism in my heart. Rather, I had opportunity to confess on my way there and to receive the forgiveness and cleansing promised.

Well, if you think that was the end of my Father’s lesson to me that evening, you are wrong. He gave me an opportunity to see if I took the lesson to heart…or had it merely been head knowledge.

As I passed one of the offering plates, a lady with great disdain on her face corrected me (it was so animated that everyone else knew what was happening). She had rebuked me for the way I was serving. Ahhh. I remembered my lesson. I had told God that morning that I was ready to listen. And I did. I felt His love. And I let Him love her by using me….and praying silently for her to be blessed. (BTW, I also prayed for Him to remind her that she, too, was about to take communion…just in case He was so busy with me that He forgot about her. 🙂 )

There is yet another part of this…

It’s the part that happened after church. I walked over to her and thanked her for her help and told her that next time I would try to remember to do what she had suggested. That was definitely God loving her by using me. I would not have thought of doing that on my own.

Being Busted by God is a good thing! And when you are His child, it feels like LOVE!

Have you ever had a time that you were Busted by God?

Secret Sleep Aid

Looking for a good sleep aid?

Frustrating, isn’t it…tossing and turning at night…trying to fall asleep?

I might have an answer for you…if you are willing to try it. No purchase necessary.

I’m about to share my cool discovery with you. If you truly want to improve your ability to fall asleep, you won’t hesitate to try this. But just in case you need an extra incentive…I double-dare you to try my secret.

This secret sleep aid has worked for me about 5 years.

Here’s my story: After years of sleep deprivation, I was desperate for sleep. I had a job that required me to work one day until 9:00 p.m. and then the next day have to leave for work at 6:30 a.m. and work 10 hours and then it was often the 9 p.m. schedule on the following day. Sometimes, it would be two 9 p.m. days in a row. Or two or three early a.m. days in a row, following by the 9 p.m. day. Some weeks we were working 6 days a week. It was hard to get a routine. It was difficult to fall asleep.

We all know it is easier to fall asleep if you have a routine you follow each night.

Since I was not able to have a dependable routine because my work schedule was beyond my control, I needed a solution to help me fall asleep soon after my head hit the pillow, no matter what time it was each night.

I’ve heard your groans as you also sometimes toss and turn at night. And for some of you, it is a regular almost nightly occurence. Maybe it is not from an undependable work schedule. Maybe it is a new baby. Or maybe it is a child that has nightmares. Or any myriad of possibilities that are preventing your falling asleep at night.

Assuming you have checked out other possibilities…like no caffeine late in the day or evening…or an illness that is causing great pain that is preventing sleep. That is a different story. We can talk about that special circumstance if you would like…

But for now, let’s stick with this scenario…

I want you to have your best life possible and I know that sleep is one way to help you to have the best outlook on your life, no matter what challenges you face. I want you to know my secret so you can get some relief…so you can feel your best…so you can do your best…so your work, family, church, neighborhood relationships have the best possible chance of being great (not just good). So all of your life just “works” better! A life coach likes to help people figure out ways to be their best self (by God’s design).

With all that said, here’s the secret

After you have made the room dark and cool and as quiet…

Fluff your pillow.

Lie down on your bed.

Close your eyes.

And

Smile.

Then…

Keep smiling.

That is really what I said.

Smile.

Keep smiling.

And think of how much Jesus loves you.

And imagine Him reaching His arms toward you in love.

And before you know it, it is morning.

Don’t laugh. Well, laugh if you want…because it IS funny…but is also works. It works for me and it will work for you if you give it an honest try.

God says in the Bible that a joyful heart doeth good like medicine. So…smiling will affect the way you look at your life and it will tell your heart that you are joyful and before you know it, you are looking at life differently. And your life “feels” better, even if nothing has changed…(except that you are smiling more).  🙂

Bottom line: I want you to be able to get a better night’s sleep. Like me.

Let me know if I can help. Here is some of what I do..

The World’s Cheapest Facelift

I’m about to share with you how to get the world’s cheapest facelift. But, you have to be actively involved in this. Are you willing?

You’re still here, so here we go…first off…

Stop reading for a minute and go get a mirror. Bring it back to your computer as you read the rest of this post…Look into the mirror…

And…

Smile.

Now…

Frown.

Now…

Lay the mirror down. Smile again. How do you feel?

Pick up the mirror again. Look at your face. Look at your jawline. Look at your eyes and the area around them.

Now frown while looking into the mirror. Look at your jawline. Look at your eyes and the area around them.

Now smile again into the mirror. SEE the difference? You can give yourself the world’s cheapest facelift by just smiling. Often.

Smile and the world smiles with you. Frown and you frown alone.

Are You Headed in the Right Direction?

Are you headed in the right direction? Do you remember the Chariots of Fire movie? Do you remember the sister that believed in Eric Liddell the preacher, but tried to talk him out of running? Do you remember his comment to her when he tried to explain why he had to run? He said, “I feel His pleasure when I run.” When was the last time you felt His pleasure when you ran the course you are running now?

Are you headed in the right direction? In God’s direction for your life?

I just read a story about a wealthy 47-year old Austrian man. He had pondered his path and made a radical decision to give away his $4.7 million fortune.  Proverbs 4:23 reminds us to keep our heart with all diligence and verse 26 tells us to “ponder the path of your feet, and let all your ways be established.”  For the 47-year old, that meant the realization that “his wealth and lavish spending were keeping him from real life and happiness.”  He believed he had not been headed in the right direction, so he adjusted his course.

“Karl Rabeder told the Daily Telegraph (London), ‘I had the feeling I was working as a slave for things I did not wish for or need. It was the biggest shock in my life when I realized how horrible, soulless, and without feeling the ‘five-star’ lifestyle is.'” (Excerpts from Our Daily Bread devotional, August 22, 2011)

This courageous man now uses his money to fund charities he set up to help the people of Latin America. Do you think people that loved him misunderstood him? Criticized him? What about Eric Liddell (his biography is available in book form as well)? Do you think it was easy for him?

God sends each of us down a different path. He probably isn’t telling you to give all your money away. But maybe He is! If your heart is pounding, you might want to check in with Him on that one. 🙂  And He probably isn’t telling you to run a race rather than preach, like Eric Liddell, but maybe He is! You and He are the only ones that really know the answer to that question.

When was the last time you pondered the path you’ve taken? Is it time to make some adjustments? Are you headed in the right direction?

What are your thoughts about all this?  When was the last time you asked the Lord: Am I headed in the right direction? What would make You, Lord, the happiest? Am I using my gifts, talents, strengths, money, and time in the way You desire?

A few sessions with a Christian Life coach are a perfect place to go to sort out the answers to those kinds of questions. We are trained to help you look at where you are and where you want to be, for the purpose of working towards closing that gap between the two. We are a safe place to explore those tender places in your heart that are yearning for expression.

May He give you grace today to embrace His Word and follow Him with all your heart! 🙂

Murmurming or Gratefulness?

Which will we choose? Murmuring or gratefulness? Can we actually learn to overcome grumbling? There are certainly lots of challenges to capture our attention and direct it toward the negative aspects of life.

Job (of the Old Testament book named after him) had friends that were miserable comforters. He lost all but his wife and yet he did not curse God and die as his wife suggested. Job had lots of questions. He didn’t know that he had been chosen to be an object lesson to satan to prove how authentic Job’s faith in God was.

It is possible to recognize a true follower of God by observing their lives. Did Job grieve over loss? It hurt him as deeply as it hurts one who has not yet experienced the transforming light of God. The difference is, those with a relationship with God have hope…even if they don’t understand. They trust that God is The Lord God Almighty. Maker of Heaven and earth. Creator of all that exists. And much, much wiser than our own limited earth-bound understanding.

Those with a relationship with Father God know that whatever trials…whatever painful ordeal…whatever suffering…whether it is character-building or whether it is to show the world how a Christian reacts to crisis, they continue to follow…maybe with sadness, and a sense of loss, but also with hope. Maybe with confusion, but also with trust in the God of the Bigger Picture. We earthlings see through earth-bound eyes. God knows how it all fits together for the Bigger Picture. He sees through the lens of Eternity.

Murmuring or Gratefulness? Which will you choose? I keep a daily Ebenezer journal. Ebenezer is an old word that means, “Thus far the Lord has helped us.” No requests. No murmurings. Only gratefulness. Through this daily evening written record, I see major interventions of God in my life. I begin to see a trend of God being involved in my life. My dreams are sweeter and I wake more refreshed and at peace. I begin to actually look forward to each new day as I look expectantly for God to show up. I am actually recording His involvement in my day-to-day life.

Try it…and then let me know how it changes your outlook on life.
